Cheapest SUVs, Trucks & Vans to Insure

By the Mercury Team

Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) have quickly overtaken sedans and even sports cars as the new “it” car and sales show no sign of slowing down. SUVs, vans and pickup trucks are expected to make up an astounding 78 percent of vehicle sales by 2025.

“Consumers have 100% bought into SUVs,” said Mercury Insurance Director of Product Management R&D Chong Gao. “Auto manufacturers have responded with a ton of models, which is why Mercury’s list is a great guide for consumers because insurance cost is an important factor in purchasing a vehicle.”

SUVs and trucks offer many advantages over sedans. In addition to more cargo space and increased seating capacity, the higher ride leads to wider visibility on the road. An SUV or truck can also carry more weight than a standard sedan or hatchback, allowing you to fill the ample space with extra luggage or lifestyle equipment, and is capable of towing things like boats or trailers. These larger vehicles are also at an advantage safety-wise, as they tend to have sturdier frames and are built on stronger chassis.

Recent models have also benefitted from technological advancements like turbocharged and direct fuel-injected engines that result in fuel efficiency that is leaps and bounds ahead of the models that preceded them.
